Velocity -

The velocity of a body is the distance travelled per second by the body in a specified direction.

Thus, the rate of change of displacement of a body which time is called the velocity. It is numerically equal to the displacement of the body in 1 s.

Extra points -

  • It is a vector quantity.
  • For velocity, both its magnitude and direction must be specified.
  • The unit of velocity is same as the unit of speed i.e. the S.I. unit of velocity is metre per second (m/s) and the C.G.S unit is centimetre per second (cm/s).
