In British India, the was enacted to curtail the freedom of the Indian press and prevent the expression of criticism toward British policies—notably, the opposition that had grown with the outset of the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

This act provides extensive rights to the British government to censor the vernacular newspapers.

If any material was found seditious then the press was warned and if it continues then the press was seized.
