HOLA friend!!
Rajdeep here.....

What is Vernacular Press Act?
The Indian Vernacular Press was contributing greatly to arouse Nationalistic feelings among the Indians.

The Press:
1. Informed people about the happenings of time.
2. Severely criticized the Government's repressive policies.

And what was humurous was that, the British could not understand the Vernacular Languages like Bengali, Gujarati, and Hindi.

Hence, the Viceroy, Lord Lytton, as a repressive measure, launched the Vernacular Press Act or the Gagging Act in 1878.

The purpose of the Act:
1. The VP Act banned the publication of the Vernacular newspapers.
2. The editors who opposed this act were severely beaten, and put behind the bars by the British officials.

Still, the Act could not stop the nationalistic feelings among the Indians.

The most well-known Vernacular newspapers were:
1. Shome Prakash, Bengali
2. Amrit Bazaar Patrika, Bengali
3. Rast Goftar, Gujarati
4. Kesari and Mahratta, Hindi
5. Mirat-ul-Akabr, Persian
6. Samvad Kaumudi, Bengali

Thanks!!

Anu726: thank you
