The vernacular press act was passed in 1878, modeled on the Irish Press Laws, to curtail the freedom of the Indian-language press.

The act was proposed by Lord Lytton, then Viceroy of India, and was unanimously passed by the Viceroy's Council on 14 March 1878.

It was passed to prevent Indian people from criticising the British policies through media and press.
