The Vernier Caliper is a precision instrument that can be used to measure internal and external distances extremely accurately. The modern Vernier calliper was invented by Joseph R. Brown in 1851. It was the first practical tool for exact measurements that could be sold at an affordable price to ordinary machinists. The Vernier Calliper consists of a main scale fitted with a jaw at one end.

a vernier caliper is a measuring device. it has least count of 0.01 cm or 0.1 mm. it is used to measure smaller objects such as diameter of a thin cylinder. a vernier caliper, has a main scale and a sliding scale it has two jaws to hold the object to be measured. the main scale is 15 cm long with 0.1 mm divisions on it. while vernier or sliding scale has 10 divisions. the most coinciding division is taken as the sliding scale reading. we add main scale reading to sliding scale reading which is multiplied to the least count.i.e. MSR + SSR X LC.
to get the correct measurement. you may find it in class 11 physics NCERT part 1 chapter 2
