According to the vital force theory, the organic compounds cannot be synthesised in laboratory. Instead it can only be synthesised inside a living organism through a force known as vital force.

This vital force theory was first proposed by Berzilius.

Thus organic compounds were defined to be synthesised or prepared only inside the living organisms.

But this theory came to end when, a scientist named Wholer was successful in synthesising urea in laboratory.

According to vital force theory, organic compounds must have their origin in living organisms and consequently could never be synthesized from inorganic material. This theory is known as vital force theory.
