A volic cells works on the principle of separation of electrolytic solutions.

Zinc is used as anode and copper as cathod.
They're kept in their sulphate solutions and then attached through a wire over a small distance and a salt bridge joins the two solution to maintain the charge difference for a longer period of time.

They're also called as Galvanic cell.
