Answer:

The valence shell electron pair repulsion theory or the VSEPER theory

Lewis concept is unable to explain the shapes of molecules. so the vsepr theory provider simple prosedure to predict the shapes of covalent molecule.

inventor: Sidgwick and Powell invented it in 1940.It was farther developed and redefined by Nyholm and Gillespie (1957).

the main of postulates VSEPR theory are as follow.

  • the shape of a molecule depend upon the number of valence shell electron pair around the central atom.
  • pairs of electrons in the valence shell repel one another since their electron cloud are negatively charged.
  • these pairs of electron 3 to occupy such position in space that minimise repulsion and thus maximize distance between them.
  • the valence shell is taken as a sphere with the electron pair localising on sperical surface at maximum distance from one another.
  • a multiple bond is treated as if it is a single electron pair and the two or three electron pairs of a multiple Bond are treated as single super pair.
  • where two or more resonance structure can present a molecule the Vsepr model is applicable to any such structure.
