Addition of water makes concrete easier to work. Because of which, most of the times, workers keep adding water more than what it actually is essential in the mix. This reduces the strength of the concrete.
Cement reacts with water and forms gel. Once the gel gets hardened, it acts as glue to bind aggregates and provides solidity. But, to do so, there is specific amount of water that the cement requires. The excess water remains entrapped in the concrete mix, thereof, voids are formed as the water evaporates. The voids makes the concrete weak or reduces its strength.
The other important effect of high water cement ratio or such voids is, it can also contribute in corrosion of steel rebar. When steel comes in contact with moisture and oxygen entering through these voids, it begins to corrode.
Thus, increasing water cement ratio reduces strength of concrete along with increasing possibility of corrosion in rebar.
