This is in reference to calorimetry.

Suppose X heat is given to the calorimeter. This results in Y° rise in temperature of the calorimeter.

If the same X heat is given to Z kg water, such that the temperature rise of the water is exactly Y°, then Z is the water equivalent of the calorimeter.
