When the conditions are so created that the crop root-zone gets deprived of proper aeration due to the presence of excessive moisture or water content, the tract is said to be waterlogged.
Waterlogging can be best understood with the help of a hydrologic equation, which states that
Inflow = Outflow -I- Storage
Irrigation water is used to flood the fields. If it is used in excess it may help appreciably in raising the water table. Good drainage facility is very essential.

Waterlogging refers to the saturation of soil with water.[1] Soil may be regarded as waterlogged when it is nearly saturated with water much of the time such that its air phase is restricted and anaerobic conditions prevail. In extreme cases of prolonged waterlogging, anaerobiosis occurs, the roots of mesophytes suffer, and the subsurface reducing atmosphere leads to such processes as denitrification, methanogenesis, and the reduction of iron and manganese oxides.[2]
