The contamination of water by harmful substances is known as water pollution.
The four main resources of pollution in ganga are:-
1)The sewage treatment plants run on electricity and everybody knows the condition of electricity in UP.
2)The rain water doesn't go below ground rather it flows through drains into the river. Also due to high use of fertilizers and pesticides in agriculture field, this all flows to the river through rain water and harm aqautic wildlife.
3)Thousands of bodies are cremated on the banks of the river yearly with many being released into the river with hopes that their souls may have a direct path to heaven.
4)The rivers (Yamuna,Kaali,RamGanga) which merge with the Ganga also add pollutants to it. So to clean Ganga it is necessary to clean these merging rivers too.
