Water pollution is the contamination of water with number of chemicals, sewage waste and other harmful substances.

4 major sources of water pollution are-

(i) Industries- Industries release non- treated waste in water bodies, causing threat to living forms in that water body.

(ii) Accidental oil leakage- This happens when the ships carrying oil gets leaked and the oil spills in the ocean or sea.

(iii) Marine dumping- People discharge the waste produced near them in the water bodies, it also causes water pollution.

(iv) Agricultural production- The fertilizers and pesticides used in agricultural activities run off with the water in water bodies, causing water pollution.
