Wave motion is the transfer of energy and momentum from one point of the medium to another point of the medium without actual transport of matter between two points.
- (i) It is the disturbance which travels forward through the medium but not through the particles of the medium.
- (ii) Each particle receives vibrations a little later than its preceding particle.
- (iii) The wave velocity is different from the velocity of the particles with which they vibrate about their mean positions.
- (iv) The wave velocity remains constant in a given medium, whereas particle velocity changes continuously during its vibrations about the mean position.
