Answer :-

Winnowing is a process to separate light and heavy substances from a mixture, using wind or air.

The most common example is a farmer separating dry husk from it's grains.

Other example :-

  • Separating stones from rice.

How does winnowing work :-

To separate a mixture of husk and grains, a farmer pours his mixture from a height in the opposite direction of the wind. The husk being lighter than the grains, will blow away with the wind, and the grains which are heavy will fall down on the ground. The farmer will hence get his grains separated from husk.
