winnowing is basically separating husk from grain.

if u live in jammu kashmir then we call it chjja. And in west bengal its called kullo ( i m not sure) u might have seen that . Your mother or grandmother uses that to separate rice from husk and other particles like stone.

As grains are heavier and the husk is lighter bith get seperated
