Winnowing is the precess by which grain is separated from husk. The mixture of grain and husk is allowed to drop from a height , the husk being lighter gets carried away by the wind and forms a separate heap while the grains being relatively heavier fall straight down, and pile up. Thus the separation takes place by the action of wind, this method is known as winnowing, farmers prefer this method.. no apparatus is required, and the method is very easy.

Hope this helps :)
