0There are numerous hurdles on the way to economic empowerment in Uganda today. The greatest is the culture. Uganda is a country with about 60 tribes, each with their own cultures and norms. I am from the Acholi in Northern Uganda. Our tribe has got all their norms and practices as well as the rules and regulations against women. First off, in my culture, women are not allowed to own land and other resources. Her children though are allowed to inherit the land and other resoruces of their father. A woman cannot start any business without consultation and approval of the husband. If she was granted permission and started the business, she would make money and keep track of the business records. All the money and the control of the business is not in the hands of the woman but all is upon the husband. This therefore keeps the woman a mere slave and very inferior. If the husband died, the elder son (not any daughter) would take the responsibilities of the resoruces she made. If there was no son or elder son, the uncles and would come in to possess everything. This even makes the woman suffer more.

Women who are engaged in their businesses today are either diveroced or those who went to school and learnaged. They probably married civilized men who understand about the contribution and rights of women in entrepreneurship. But only 1% of such men exist in my community. We are here gathered with the support from United Nations Women to empower every woman and girl economically but we need to get medicine to such vices already in existance in our communities. I and you have a lot to do about women economic empowerment. It requires team working, lots of advocacy, sacrifice and efforts. Men are needed most here because in my culture, the men are heard more than the women.
