Wood will not melt but it can be pyrolysed (i.e. heated in the absence of air) and depending how much you do it, you get a mixture of tar, oil and gas, plus some carbon and ash. The more you heat it, the more compounds break down into smaller molecules.

This used to be an important industrial method for creating certain liquid chemicals such as methanol and creosote.
