Wootz steel is a crucible steel characterized by a pattern of bands, which are formed by  sheets of micro carbides within a tempered martensite or a pearlite matrix in higher carbon and steel , or by ferrite and pearlite banding in lower carbon steel.  The wootz sword was produced all over South India. The sword which was made of wootz steel  used to have very sharp edge  with a flowing pattern. This pattern was the result of very small carbon crystals embedded in the iron.
