word formation refers to the ways in which new words are made on the basis of other words or morphemes. Also called derivational morphology.
Words are made from root words, prefixes and suffixes. The simplest and most basic form of a word is called a root word. A great number of words in English forming by adding a set of letters to the root word.
A prefix is a set of letters ( which we can also call a word element) added to the beginning of a root word to form a new word. Some prefixes are - un-, dis-, ex-, etc.
Happy - unhappy
agree - disagree
port - import; export
A suffix is a set of letters ( or a word element) added to the end of the root word to form a new word. Some suffixes are : -er, -able, -ful and -less.
Teach - teacher.
Break - breakable
Care - Careful ; careless.
