friction is a self adjusting force which act according to its need.
friction depends on material of surface
its an resistive force which stops the motion of a body.

for eg: you have seen that if a body is pushed with some force after some time the speed of body gradually decrease and finally it get stopped this all is due to friction acting on the body in opposite direction.

one more example: you have seen if someone walks on slippery surface they get slipped due to less frictional force between there legs and ground
