writ:

  • A writ is a formal legal order given by a Court.
  • Any warrant issued by the Supreme Court, instructions, directives and so on shall be called writs.
  • The competence of the Supreme Court about a written petition (article 226) is broader and also extends to constitutional laws. Anything issued by an authority shall be written.
  • The government issued orders, summons, guidelines, etc. are instances of written documents.
  • Five major forms of writs exist viz. 'habeas corpus', 'mandamus, prohibition', 'quo warranto and certiorari'.
