The Indian Constitution was drafted on the lines of the British, US, Irish, French, Australian, Canadian, and Soviet Constitutions. The Indian Constitution comprises of 448 articles, 25 Parts, 12 Schedules, 5 Appendices and 101 Amendments.
It is the supreme law in India. Any law found to be in violation of the Constitution would be considered as unconstitutional and declared as void wholly or partly.
The Constitution lays down the Fundamental Rights and Freedoms available to every citizen. It is the duty of the State to ensure that every citizen’s rights are protected. The Constitution also provides the Directive Principles of State Policy, which the State has to follow.
The 10 Fundamental Duties that every citizen has to perform are also laid down in the Constitution.
In case of infringement of any fundamental rights or lack of performance of DPSPs, the constitution lays down constitutional remedy of writs.
The Finance, Property, Contract and Suits framework is also laid down in the Constitution, the most recent amendment being the GST regime.
Other provisions in the Indian Constitution include provisions w.r.t. emergency; provisions w.r.t the Union, States, Panchayats, Union Territories, Municipalities; provisions for SC/ST/OBCs and so on.
