O represents an atom of Oxygen. An atom of Oxygen is very reactive. Nascent Oxygen can not remain free in nature. It is very reactive. So, an atom of Oxygen reacts with another atom and forms an Oxygen molecule.
        O + O ------------- O2    (2 is in subscript)
So right equation is
       2Mg + O2 ---------------- 2MgO
