First, we need to understand where the possible outcomes thing came from. Basic probability lesson, right? They say a coin has a head and a tail. That’s two possible outcomes. Since each outcome has an equal chance, and the total is 1, each outcome must have a probability of 1/2.
Notice that clause in italics? The outcomes need to have equal chance for this method to work.
However, as in our case of the high school kids against some of the world’s best, the chance is not equal (according to intuition and common sense, not logical proof)
