| x | means the absolute value of x. Absolute value is the value of the number regardless of its sign. Whether it is negative or positive it will be x only. If there is no sign, we always assume it as positive. Thus, it can never be negative.

Exception - If it is - | x |, then it will always be negative as -(+x) = -x.
