XML stands for  "Extensible Markup Language". It is a meta-language that allows to define markup languages developed by the World Wide Web Consortium  used to store data in legible form. It comes from the SGML language and allows to define the grammar of specific languages  to structure large documents. Unlike other languages, XML supports databases, being useful when several applications must communicate with each other or integrate information.
