A stanza consists of four lines in a poem. It is a set of grouped words. Most poems have a meter where lines rhyme with each other.

Stanza, originates from ˈstænzə/; [ˈstantsa], which is an Italian word.  Stanzas have a certain length and a meter.

During Shakespeare’s time a fourteen lined stanza came in the form of sonnet. Most often the lines in some poems often rhyme with each other.

For example if one goes by Robert Frost’s poem, “Walking by Woods in a Snowy Evening”, one comes upon the stanza:

The woods are lovely dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

The words “deep” and “keep” rhyme with each other and so does “sleep".
