Answer:

European colonialism and colonization was the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over other societies and territories, founding a colony, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Research suggests, the current conditions of postcolonial countries have roots in colonial actions and policies.[1][2] For example, colonial policies, such as the type of rule implemented,[3] the nature of investments,[4][5] and identity of the colonizers,[6] are cited as impacting postcolonial states. Examination of the state-building process, economic development, and cultural norms and mores shows the direct and indirect consequences of colonialism on the postcolonial states.

Over the course of history, politics and religion have influenced the arts. During the Middle Ages, the enormous power of the church caused art to be almost exclusively related to religion. In recent times, the Vietnam War influenced Pop artists from the 1960s and 1970s. The communist regimes of the former Soviet Union and North Korea restricted artistic expression to almost only political propaganda.

Similarly, the 16th century was a time of religious instability and significant political changes in Europe, which deeply influenced the visual arts of this period.

16th Century Europe

Politics

Charles V was an important political figure during the 16th century. He was part of the Habsburg family and became king of Spain in 1519 at age 19. His domains quickly expanded all over Europe as he inherited several crowns. Much of today's Germany was then part of the Holy Roman Empire, over which he became ruler in 1520. In 1530, he also became king of southern Italy and inherited the territories of Austria and the Netherlands.

The court of Charles V was located in the Spanish city of Toledo, but he often moved throughout the kingdom. He commissioned his brother to take care of most issues in Central Europe. Charles V's vast domains in Catholic territories made him a strong opponent of Protestantism during the Counter-Reformation.

Religion

In 1517, the Protestant Reformation started with the publication of Martin Luther's critique of the Catholic Church, which challenged the institution's image and power and sparked a religious revolution.

The Sack of Rome in 1527 was carried out by mutinied troops of Charles V and some followers of Luther. The city was taken by assault. Many Vatican soldiers, as well as civilians, were killed, and many religious buildings were robbed and destroyed. This event is often considered the end of the Italian Renaissance because it caused many people to flee the city, including artists, and the population decreased dramatically. The Vatican lost much prestige and started to act against the Reformation.
