ABSTRACT After the Genocide against Tutsi of 1994 in Rwanda, sports were intensively utilized to rebuild the country by engaging the youth and the wider community in peace-building goals and objectives. For this reason, different sports were utilized to spread messages of peace and reconciliation, gender equality, prevention of diseases among others. Recently, Basketball as one of the popular sports in Rwanda was used as a tool for changing lives of underserved youth and families, a programme that was initiated with the support of the International Basketball Foundation (IBF). The purpose of this programme aims the improvement of the living conditions of targeted underserved communities via the lessons learnt through the practice of the Basketball, a venture associated with broader development programmes of developing National Federations (NFs). The purpose of this article is to showcase how basketball is used to support young participants and their families from disadvantaged communities to improve living conditions through an initiative that was made feasible with support from the IBF. The programme, called Basketball For Good started in two primary schools in Rubavu and Muhanga District, we conclude by reflecting on the future perspectives of Sport for Development (SFD) programmes in Rwanda .
