If the p and n regions in a diode are
heavily doped, the breakdown
voltage can be reduced. Heavy
doping reduces the width of the
depletion region and the electric
field at the barrier will be very high
even for low voltage. The field is so
strong that the electrons in the
covalent bond can break away from
the bonds. This effect is known as
Zener effect.

it is a type of electrical breakdown, which was discovered by clarence melvin zener.it occurs in reverse biased p n diode when the electric field enables tunnelling of electrons frome the valency to the conduction band of semi conductor.

hope it helps u . mark it has brainliest.
