zero error is defined as the error in the air pointing when the device isn't used.

the changes the final reading in the device by some units (usually very small)

zero errors can be found in vernier calipers and screw gauge

There are both negative and positive errors

Negative zero error

when the zero of vernier or screw gauge lies on the left side of main scale it is called negative zero error

this error should be added to the final reading

Positive zero error

when the zero of vernier or screw gauge lies on the right side of main scale it is called negative zero error

this error should be subtracted from the final reading
