The Zona Pellucida is present at the outside end of the egg's membrane.

  • Its main function is to make sure that out of the numerous sperms that strike the surface of the oocyte, only one sperm is able to fertilise it.
  • Another function of it is that it prevents ectopic pregnancy that is, implantation at sites other than the uterus and it accomplishes that by keeping the trophoblast layer of the blastocyst covered until it does reach the site where it is supposed to get implanted at.
