Society was tribal but egalitarian. Aryans were fair in colour and the one the inhabitants were dark in complexion. This gave social distinction. The Dasas and Dasyus were treated as slaves and Shudras.

It was tribal and egalitarian. Clean and kinship relations formed the basis of the society and family was the basic social unit. The later Vedic society came to be divided into four varnas called the brahmanas, rajanyas or kshatriyas, vaishyds and shudras.
