Montmorency is a Fox-terrier who was considered as part of the crew and treated like any human would be treated. In the story "Three Men in a Boat", he is characterised as being adventurous, clever and did not let challenges pass by him.

Montmorency was a small fox terrier breed which looked absolutely adorable as an angel. It aroused emotions in elderly people and was misjudged to be living not for long. But it wasn't long enough when the author started paying for his chickens that he ate, and he also fought with other dogs.
