Well, we know that within a ionic bond there are cations as well as anions .This bond is the result of the losing of gaining an electron. When an atom loss or give away it's electron it becomes positive charge ions so become a cation. This happens mostly in the metals.
While on the other hand , gaining an electron makes the atom anionic which means negatively charged ion. This is common in non-metals.

Metals forms Cations in Ionic Bond .
Explanation :
Ionic Bond is also known as ElectroValent Bond.
This bond is formed between the metals and non metals by the transfer of electrons.
Ionic Bond Formation:
Generally, all metals are Electropositive in nature . That means they have a tendency of losing electrons . So they form Cation.
Whereas Non metals have a tendency of Accepting electrons. So they form Anion.
Cation and Anion are attracted by strong electrostatic force of attraction and ionic bond is formed.
