'Hearts and Hands'' by O. Henry is a story about two acquaintances who meet on a train. The story follows a three persons event: a police officer, a prisoner and a lovely lady. The two men are in the same train as the young lady, they talk to the woman, and it is only at the end that we know that the police officer is a prisoner and vice versa and the girl has been taken for a ride by the two men.

Explanation:

  • Miss Fairchild looks an extrovert and almost immediately recognizes her acquaintance (a bad handcuffed man). She smiles, extending his hand and talking to a voice full of warmth and confidence, soft and deliberate
  • Miss Fairchild is Mr. Easton's old acquaintance and comes from the same elite background and has been traveling in social circles previously. When she saw him on a train again while handcuffed to a very rough man, she immediately thought he was the marshal. She can not for a moment think of him as a convicted criminal.
  • She treated both men with disdain at first with a' strong, quick disinterest.' She extended her hand towards them with a new and radiant face. She also started a conversation with them and insinuated that she was used to listening to men. As Mr. Easton, she talked to one of them, and asked him if he might remember her as an old friend.
  • The word' hearts' in the title indicates that the bond between Miss Fairchild and Mr Easton is more than friendship. A beautiful smile appeared on her face when she saw Mr. Easton, and her cheeks were turned pink.  She was attracted to Mr.Easton seeing him as marshall. She smiled at them when she recognised Mr Easton and began to converse with him.
