Mang Cesar is a selfish man, looking out to increase his wealth and not worried about the struggle of others. Outwardly, he portrays himself as generous and caring.
The people of Barok, are struggling as a result of famine. People like Pare Crispin, need money badly to survive. Knowing that he is not in a position to pay exorbitant interest, Mang Cesar still agrees to lend him money, provided he returns double the amount. It is clear that Mang Cesar has ulterior motives.
Nestor Gonzalez (1915 – 1999) is the Filipino author of the story ‘Hunger in Barok’.
