A gas, a liquid, or a solid can be dissolved into a liquid. The liquid in which these substances may dissolve is refferd to as a solvent. On the other hand, the substance that dissolves in the liquid is reffered to as the solute. The solute and the solvent combine to form a solution. A good example is mixing water and salt. In this case water is the solvent while salt is the solute.
