The Tale Of Custard the Dragon
By Ogden Nash
The Tale of Custard the Dragon, written by Ogden Nash is a humorous poem written in the form a ballad.
Summary:
The poem introduces the character Belinda who lives with a cat, a dog, a mouse and a dragon. Belinda and all her pets except the pet dragon boast about their bravery and make fun of Custard the dragon. Custard, though picturized as a magnificent creature, always pleads for a safe cage and seems to be afraid which is why Belinda and the other pets ruthlessly tease him.
One day, while they were making fun of Custard, a pirate attacks on them. Belinda along with the other pets become panic-stricken and hide at different places in their small house. The supposed to be meek dragon, becomes a ferocious creature when he finds that the pirate is a problem for his master and gobbles him up.
Though Belinda and her pets praise him for a while, they then start stating reasons that they would have fought the pirate if something wouldn't have come up right then. The dragon agrees to the fact that the rest of them are indeed braver than him and could have actually saved them from the pirate.
Theme:
The basic theme of the poem is that "Action Speaks Louder Than Words". While Belinda and her other pets only boasted about their courage though they were actually being cowards, the dragon kept quiet which led them to believe that he was a meek creature.
During the time of crisis, the characters who boasted were nowhere to be found while the dragon gobbled up the pirate in one go.
Self-praise, over-confidence, jealousy and bullying are showed by the other pets while the dragon is self-composed, determined, calm and most importantly, dedicated for selfless service to his master.
