The Van Daans and Franks had a rather difficult relationship while living in the annexe. The two families were constantly fighting about some issue or the other. Mrs Frank and Mrs. Van Daan did not get along very well. There are enough reasons for the friction. To give you one small example, Mrs. van D. has removed all but three of her sheets from the annexe’s communal linen closet. She's assuming that Mrs Frank’s linen will be used by both families. This annoyed Mrs. Frank extremely. Furthermore, Mrs. van D. is ticked off because the Franks using her china instead of theirs. She's still trying to find out what the Franks have done with their crockery. Mrs. van Daan is unbearable. Anne is continuously scolded for her incessant chatter. Mrs. Van Daan did not contribute towards the household work, she did not clean the dishes, and Margot was stuck doing the cleaning. This was also a cause of conflict.

Mrs. Van Daan was interfering and she tried to interfere in Annes life. She wanted to read Anne’s diary, and Anne refused which annoyed Mrs. Van Daan. Also, she insisted that Anne should eat vegetables, which Anne was not too happy about. Her father had to intervene and say that Anne could eat whatever she liked. This made Mrs. Van Daan feel that Anne was extremely headstrong. She often lectured Mr and Mrs. Frank about how their children were badly brought-up. Further, Anne and Mr. Van Daan were constantly at loggerheads with each other.

All the above instances show that both the families had an extremely strained and stress full relationship.
