what kind of room was a doctor living and why did he decide to leave it

This question is taken from "The Snake and the mirror" written by Vaikom Muhammad Basheer.

The doctor was leaving in a small rented room which was not electrified. It's one wall was facing the yard which was open. It was an outer room.

The doctor decided to room, when one snake slithered along his shoulders in his room, due to the fear of the snake, he decided to leave the room.
