In short, generally alkaline soil is treated with gypsum (CaSO4 2H2O). When we apply gypsum in soil it replaces Hydrogen from exchange complex with its own Calcium cation. As a result sulphuric acid comes into action which brings down pH. Soil having alkaline pH is treated with gypsum to make it suitable for cropping.
