Few people can forget those who taught them in school. Through those exciting times, when every day is an adventure and every new experience throws up a lesson, teachers who held your hand (or slapped your arm if you played truant) stay on in memory for a lifetime. They shape our thoughts and attitudes as we outgrow our minor personalities and don adult avatars. Teachers truly are The Acers.
I was lucky to have had teachers who praised the ‘good’ students’ good work, but who also guided the ‘weak’ students; teachers who indulged our animated chatter behind their backs, but who would haul you off to the principal if you persisted with your misdemeanours.
There were thin teachers and fat; teachers stern and funny; teachers who held our attention and those who droned on and on while we played noughts and crosses or swapped pictures of cricketers and film stars. They ranged from the diminutive Miss Lydia to the towering Joe Sir. While the extremely sociable social studies teacher was often mistaken for a student herself by some parents, the gaunt figure of the latter and his deep rumble would make mathematics that much more intimidating. But his deep passion for the subject would finally drive Algebra and Geometry through our thick skulls.
In primary school, we had Radha Teacher, a typical Tam-Bram if ever there was one, who was not only my class teacher but also my ‘caretaker’. She would often drop me home since she stayed close by. I was quite fond of her and was devastated when I learned years later that she had succumbed to cancer at an early age.
