The main styles of writing in literature are text types. Factual texts just strive to inform, whereas literary texts use imaginative language and images to entertain or otherwise interest the reader.

There are many components to literary writing, as well as many ways to analyze it, but four main kinds can be identified: descriptive, narrative, explanatory, and argumentative.

Descriptive text:

  • A descriptive text describes the characteristics of a person or an object. Its goal is to reveal and describe a certain person, place, or item.
  • As a result, this descriptive text can be defined as a text that explains what a person or an object is like, including its form, properties, quantity, and so on.
  • The goal of descriptive writing is to describe, portray, or reveal a person or object, whether abstract or concrete.

Narrative text:

  • The primary goal of the narrative is to entertain readers by capturing and maintaining their attention. However, narratives can be produced to instruct or inform, as well as to influence attitudes or social beliefs, as shown in soap operas and television plays that address current concerns.
  • Narratives, unlike recounts, sequence people/characters in time and place, but unlike recounts, the stories set up one or more problems that must be handled at some point
  • The "story grammar" refers to the common structure or basic plan of narrative material.
  • Narratives come in a variety of forms. They can be made up, real, or a blend of the two. Fairy tales, mysteries, science fiction, romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, a slice of life, and personal experience are examples of these genres.

Expository text:

  • Nonfiction texts that provide facts and information about a topic are known as expository texts or informational texts. These academic texts are common in science, history, and the social sciences.
  • The content is fact-based, with the goal of exposing the truth via a trustworthy source. The goal of a true and intentional explanatory essay is to educate the reader.
  • Exposition can also be defined as writing that is clear, concise, and well-organized. Expository writing goes to the point swiftly and effectively
  • Scientific reports, academic essays, and magazine articles are some of the most common types of expository writing. Newspapers, academic publications, and information books are all examples.

Argumentative text:

  • An argumentative text is one that gives counter-arguments on both sides of a topic. It's possible that both sides are shown equally balanced, or that one side is offered with more force than the other. It all depends on the writer and whose side he most strongly favors. The following is the general structure of an argumentative text.
  • Aside from the structure described above, which is known as a classical model, there are two major models. The Toulmin and Rogerian models are two more models.
  • An argumentative text presents opposing viewpoints on a topic. However, it presents one side more favorably or carefully than the other, in the hopes of swaying readers to the author's preferred viewpoint. The main purpose of these articles is to persuade readers of a point of view by providing them with the whole picture.
  • Argumentative literature can be found in a wide range of subjects, including science, philosophy, politics, journalism, justice, advertising, and various forms of mass communication.

Understanding the distinct features of different writing genres helps in understanding the way to write for a variety of objectives.  Understanding the many underlying text patterns allows one to organize their own work more effectively, ensuring that their writing is suited for the purpose.
