The narrator did not get the kind of welcome she expected from Mrs dorling. She did not recognized her, of course she pretended that.

Answer:

Mrs. Dorling was hostile towards the narrator.

Explanation:

After the war was over and things returned to normalcy, the narrator wanted to see her mother’s possessions which were with Mrs. Dorling. So, she visited the Marconi street and went to see Mrs. Dorling.

On ringing the bell, she was subjected to hostile treatment by Mrs. Dorling who opened the door just a bit. She wasn’t forthcoming as to whether she remembered the narrator or pretended not to.

The narrator was persistent enough, but Mrs. Dorling said she did not know her and refused to let her in. She kept staring at her pretending she didn’t remember her mother.
