There are several circumstances that can determine where settlements inhabit within a province.  The places of a settlement is the actual land that the settlements is built upon.  The situation is the location of a settlement in relation to the things that are around it.

Physical factors that influence the location of a settlement include;

Water supply – settlements require water, they usually dwell on wet localities for this. Settlements developed off from rivers and water stores to bypass flooding are found at dry localities.

Aspect and shelter – In the northern territory south-facing inclinations undergo more sunlight and are preserved from cold Northern winds.  More settlements and farming land are hence found on South facing hills.

The commercial factors involve such as communications is also an important factor for settlements so that places can be easily located.
