What kinds of states were there in indua before independence?

There weren't actually states as such. It was more of like independent kingdoms and provinces.

Moreover there were several divisions based on the lingual and religious basis.

To name some, we had Central Province, Kingdom of Awadh etc.

Then post independence, our then home minister Sardar Patel united them and made it "A Country".

At the time of the independence in 1947, Indian Union had 12 states. Later,Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim,Manipur, Tripura joined the Indian Union. The British India had 17 Provinces and 565 princely states, before 1947.
