sound waves are longitudinal waves...

this is because when sound waves passes through air, the molecules of air move far and come close(compression and rarefaction) showing longitudinal waves.

compression refers to the part of longitudinal wave when the molecules are close to each other whereas rarefaction is that part of longitudinal wave when the molecules are far apart from each other
